Social Memory and Identity in the Islands of the Northeastern Aegean from the Early Iron Age to Late Antiquity: Thasos, Samothrace and Lemnos
Synopsis
The present volume examines archaeological finds from three islands of the northern Aegean (Thasos, Samothrace, and Lemnos) in order to demonstrate the contribution of material remains to the construction and consolidation of both social memory and cultural identities.
The study is divided into four parts. The first discusses the different forms of social memory identified by scholars from various fields of the humanities. The second presents case studies from Thasos and Samothrace aimed at illustrating the relationship between topography and memory. The third examines different aspects of ethnic memory and identity as reflected in material remains and narratives from Thasos, Samothrace, and Lemnos. The fourth and final part presents the conclusions.
